Woah. Nothing says crazy post Adepticon meta shifts like a random list to end the week. On the way back from the Gt we started talking about some of the things that we do and don't see in orks after seeing both the successes and failings of our nob biker/60 boy teammate. I have for a while been thinking about how to create a full ork shooting list, and used this opportunity to build such a list. Taking suggestions from my other team mates and a friend who won Bugeater last year with Orks we came up with this concoction at 1850.
Warboss (Squig/Armor/Cybork/Klaw/Slugga/Bike)
15 Lootas
15 Lootas
15 Lootas
11 Gretchin (Runtherd)
30 Shoota Boyz
30 Shoota Boyz
30 Shoota Boyz
Dakkajet (Extra Gun)
Dakkajet (Extra Gun)
Dakkajet (Extra Gun)
Skyshield
My thoughts after the jump...
Essentially the entire army will have a 4++ unless it is pulled out of place by assault thanks to the poor wording and lack of FAQ for the skyshield. remember that one model in a unit needs to be on the shield to give the whole unit the invulnerable save. The grots go into reserve to grab a back objective out of line of sight. The rest of the list just shoots shoots and shoots. The warboss is there to intercept problems and take out land raiders. I hope to get a game with or against it this weekend, so there may be more thoughts on it next week.
Other than that, there doesn't seem much to say. The question is can your list handle taking as many S6 and S7 shots as this one puts out?
Can you fit all of those unit on the Skyshield? If you do, 4++ or not, many orks will be dying to large blast shots.
ReplyDeleteThe Lootas would be the #1 target as they have range and they will have to make some LD checks to stay on the board or in the location they are in.
The Shoota Boyz will almost be ignored as the limited range they have and limited shots outside of 18'' isn't anything to be scared of.
I think a list like this needs something to keep the enemy busy. nob Bikers with the Warboss would be nice because they can't be ignored. If you run them at the enemy, the enemy has to try and kill them or get eaten by them.
I am not a big fan of the Dakka Jet and think that the Bikers could fit in for the points saved on the 3 Jets. This will allow your support units to remain alive longer I believe.
Anyone from Turn 7 going to the Bugeater?
I Agree with Yeeman about the lootas on skyshield and that you need another distraction unit like Nob bikes, that would really help otu your list.
DeleteHowever i like you dakka jets in the list and the shoota boys. I like this site, im going to have to follow.
The big thing to remember is that as long as one unit is on the shield the entire unit benefits from the 4++. This means they can still be 2” apart and denying a lot of the table as well as not being in a perfect formation for blast templates. Getting rid of the lootas takes the same amount of firepower as it does to kill 27 MEQ by my quick math. Can lists do that? Yup. But most can’t do it on turn one from that range.
DeleteShootas are not there for killing as you not. They allow me to create a bubble preventing anyone from getting in rapid fire of my lootas and off my objectives. That many modles spaced correctly makes a headache for flyers too. Ignored shootas also easily score late game, but that doesn’t need to be stated.
I have ran the numbers getting nob bikers, but the point investment is not justifiable. In today’s meta while they take shots, they still end up dying without paired threat vectors, which a list like this does not have. By my count the extra S7 shooting will on average produce better results, while it is true that against some lists the bikerz would be better. If you look at any of my nid lists I am a firm believer in S6 shooting, my dakkafex unit was always my MVP. This is why I a huge into the jets. That is a lot of shooting for not much points.
I will be at Bugeater. Not sure if any of them would label themselves as being “from Turn 7,” but lots of people who I play with will be making the trip including Scott who got 5th at Midwest Massacre, Matt who won Bugeater last year, and of course Hulksmash the regular GT superstar along with a cast of other wonderful MN boys. I can think of at least nine of us making the trip. Who all from Back 40K will be there?
I know out here they rule that only units on the Skyshield are the ones that benefit. I know different regions play differently. if that's how they rule the Skyshield then so be it. I won't get into a RAI/RAW argument as everyone has their own opinion and I could care less as long as I know ahead of time how it is being ruled. I have been to many torunaments where they say one thing but rule another. Just depends on the player in question. I doubt Bugeater is the type of eent where it matters "who you know."
DeleteI'm not from Back 40k. I am part of the Sac City Punishers in Sacramento, CA. I look forward to meeting a bunch of you guys and having a good time at the event!
My group will be totalling 3, but I can't blame them as there is a 22 hour drive involved! Look forward to seeing you there.
Only models on the SS get the 4++.
ReplyDeleteWhat is your justification for this? The only FAQ from the original writing is to ignore the firepoints and such aspects that it doesn't have. I don't have my BRB on me for an exact quote, but it pretty clearly says "units on top" of the skyshield benefit. Thus is one model is on top the unit is on top, and thus the entire unit gains the save. It is horrendous how poorly written the rules for it are, but that is RAW as everyone I know plays it.
DeleteYou gonna be at the Bugeater? Awesome man, I'll see you there! What are you taking? I'm trying to decide if I want to stick with the GreyCrons or try some Imperial Knights (Imperial Guard + GKs, lol). Tau have changed things to the point that I think Blob warfare is going to help.
ReplyDeleteAs to your list - I think that it's going to win some games simply because people haven't had to deal with something like it before, but unsure as to how well it would do.
I'd love to see a batrep with pictures to see how exactly you plan to play it - makes me wonder if it could deal well with my own list though, as even with a 4+ cover save, I have some great flamers and decent firepower/close combat. Not saying I'd 'easily' win by any means, just wondering :)
Instead of telling you to bring Nob Bikers, I'll try different advice - take some mortars, or whatever the hell they're called. Stupidly annoying, and pretty versatile for their point cost :)
I have no idea what I am bringing. I have been playing around with three different codices, and need to decide soon so I can start painting. They all fit into the "people haven't had to deal with something like it before," but in much the same way all have some bad matchups. There will be more posts about them coming up. Just looking at what you run, I think the GreyCrons are a worse matchup for my style, but everyone is using crons right now which at least for me makes me want to run something else. That would be why I have been testing blood angel lists lately and why I played Nids in 5th, the underdog factor
DeleteA big thing for this list is how the tournament is doing terrain, as not being able to move some sometimes makes it so that the shield is too far forward, leading to collapsing lines. Also, remember that the shield is not a cover save but rather an invulnerable save meaning that flamers (oh hai heldrake) don't give an advantage against it. Purifiers are the real concern as the invo is only from shoooting.
I agree that they are annoying, and a backfield heavy is nice for Big Guns missions, but I guess I don't see the utility of it.
Yeah, I said cover when I meant Invulnerable save - you'd still have to take quite a few 4+ invulnerable saves :-p
DeleteSorry if it sounded like I was trying to say your list was inferior and that mine was the shining standard of what to bring to beat yours (because I don't at all believe that) - just asking how you'd think you'd do against it.
I've had a bit to think about this list and my thought is this: while I like the synergy your Orks have with the shield and is very potent in their 18-36" bubble of control, they will greatly struggle in missions where objectives are out of their reach.
That said, I think in the hands of a capable player, lots of lists I'd think would struggle actually end up being quite potent. I would know, I played PDF Blood Angels and won a bunch of tournaments before GW decided to give them a new book and ruined them :)
Don’t worry about it, I post lists online (and on a blog specifically rather than Dakka) because I want to hear people’s opinions on them. Not only does this refine my lists but it also lets me know what is happening regionally in the country. Just today a friend was talking about how no one likes the Swarmlord, and I was able to tell him which parts of the country they were rocking him. I certainly would say that the list you had at adepticon would do quite the number on this as the warboss is the only good way to kill the dreadknights.
DeleteI think when objectives are out of reach the situation will depend a lot on the opponent’s army, and in many ways becomes a classic game theory situation of whether they are committing any forces to come toward you. Depending on the dominant strategy I could see the orks marching forward as honestly the more of a midfield presence the boyz have, then the better protected the lootas and grots are.
