Video Battle Report: Bugeater GT Winning Tyranids vs. Blood Angels/Imperial Guard

I will have a full rundown of Bugeater later, but in short I went 3-3, my worst showing ever at a GT, but in the process won best sportsman and was nominated by the judges for best painted. While I am quite perplexed as to how my army, many of the models included having been painted in the car on the way down to Nebraska, got a perfect score on the initial appearance rubric, I am more than honored that my opponent’s thought so highly of me that I would earn the sportsmanship award.

Only the best armies are painted in this manner.
Before I go more into Bugeater (and all the GT's I have played in this Spring), I thought I would share this battle report which has been lost in a sea of tech troubles. It is timely though, as in it I face off against Matt Root, who not only won Bugeater for the second year in a row, but did so with the list I face here in this video. Facing off against his monster of a list, I will be using my triple land raider blood angels with imperial guard allies.

You can check it out after the jump!

Bugeater GT List: Nidzilla Tyranids Return!

On top of graduating from college the last few weeks have been filled with a revolving door of armies all vying to be my army for Bugeater. Chaos Daemons, Blood Angels, Chaos Space Marines, Dark Angels, my Orks hit the table in a serious list for the first time in ages, and I even started an Imperial Guard army out of unbuilt models I had sitting around. The only thing I didn’t dust off was my DE. In the end though, after much pushing by defending Bugeater Champion Matt Root, I was back with the bugs. Nidzilla is back!

Hive Tyrant (Wings/2 Twin-Linked Devourers)
Hive Tyrant (Wings/2 Twin-Linked Devourers)
Doom of Malan'Tai (Mycetic Spore)
10 Termagants
10 Termagants
Tervigon (Catalyst/Onslaught/Toxin Sacs)
Tervigon (Catalyst)
3 Biovores
2 Carnifex (2 Twin-Linked Devourers Each)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)

The meta has changed a ton in the eight months since this army last saw the table. Back then Flyrants couldn't use skyfire, utilizing blobs was only something you heard about in obscure corners of the internet, and a shocking four armies have had a new codex printed. Heldrakes were not even a thing yet. A lot has changed, and this list represents some of those changes.

Chaos Space Marine Analysis and List Building: Part Three

This series of posts has been composed a few paragraphs at a time over the last week as I have begun the journey of learning a new book, and play style, as I move away from tyranids this next tournament season. Rather than changing previous ideas or reworking this post I have left it as is. I feel that is shows the process I use while creating and testing lists as well as providing insight behind why I am and will continue to make the list building choices I have been. This is part three of four interconnected posts.

So after I made two Chaos Space Marine lists in part two, I started playing theory hammer in my head, and decided I value the high rate of fire of the autocannons over the potential utility of the terminators. Ideally the 16 S7 shots would be able to work toward replacing the 24 S6 shots that I normally get out of my Carnifex units. I tested the second list (with the small shift in dropping the Icon of Wrath for the 4th autocannon in the second havoc squad) against a Tyranid list with two flying combat hive tyrants, two trygon primes, doom of malan’tai, five hive guard, one genestealer squad with a broodlord, and a lot of hormagaunts.

We rolled up the relic and vanguard strike with night fight in effect. I went first and killed one hive guard with all my shooting (nearly all of his army was in cover, and both Tyrants were either out of line of site or out of my range). He had iron arm on both tyrants, with his warlord being T9 all but one turn of the game. I moved my zombie horde forward as well as my biker gang, leaving them on the middle line behind my aegis. His shooting did very little, and he progressed toward the middle.

Video Battle Report - Tyranids vs. Dark Angels (Tomb King) - 9/14/12

The night before the Midwest Massacre I was able to meet up with Tomb King, a very good player who even made it to the final 16 at Adepticon this year.

My Nidzilla faced off against his fearless Deathwing!

My Tyranids Take Third at the Midwest Massacre GT

Nidzilla represent! My big bugs were able to lead me into a third place finish at the six round Midwest Massacre in Missouri last weekend. The first year GT had slightly disappointing attendance with only 28 playing in the event. I was the only Tyranid player, but there was a good mix of armies with only Sisters and Dark Angels being absent (even Black Templars made a strong appearance). First place was a Daemon list with 45 flamers (who I lost to in round two) and second was a foot Grey Knight list. My other opponents played Nurgle Chaos Space Marines, Mech Imperial Guard with Space Wolf allies (Tomb King from Dakka), Hybrid Blood Angels with Grey Knight allies, Henchmen Grey Knights with Space Wolf Allies, and four flier Necrons.

I will be doing full coverage and battle reports as life allows. First I have to finish covering the Golden Throne!

Pyrovores at a GT? My Midwest Massacre List

I clearly should not ever say what I will post when, as my life of being a college senior who is both triple majoring and working full time is not conducive to being able to set a firm writing schedule. But you don’t care about my lovely life; you want to know why anyone in their right mind would bring pyrovores to a GT.

The answer is simple. Pyrovores fill several holes in my current list.

Oh, that isn’t a good enough answer? Lets look at what 45 points gets you. S4 and T4 is a bit low for that cost, but 2W and a 4+ isn’t bad. The key here is that each pyrovore is a walking heavy flamer, plus its close combat attacks ignore armor (thought at I1 and 1A you don’t want to be fighting man to man. My concept is that my list is prepared to engage targets and finish them, against hordes my big expensive beasts get stuck in. Dropping 3 pyrovores in a mycetic spore will do a huge number to anything not in power armor. Using them in this way also gives me two units for line breaker and lets me put   accurate pressure deep behind enemy lines.

Video Battle Report - Tyranids vs. Daemons of Chaos (Flying Circus)

Last Thursday I played against one of the regulars in the Twin Cities, Frozen North Gaming club founder Jeff. In the past I had only faced Jeff’s Grey Knight Purifier lists, but over the summer he has been building up some Daemons of the flying circus variety;

Fateweaver
Lord of Change (Breath of Chaos/Chaos Icon)
5 Flamers
10 Pink Horrors
10 Pink Horrors
5 Screamers
Daemon Prince (Wings/Breath of Chaos/Bolt of Tzeentch/Mark of Tzeentch)
Daemon Prince (Wings/Breath of Chaos/Bolt of Tzeentch/Mark of Tzeentch)

I brought;

Hive Tyrant (Warlord/Wings/Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Hive Tyrant (Wings/Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Doom of Malan’tai (Spore Pod)
Tervigon (Onslaught/Catalyst/Cluster Spines/Toxin Sacs)
Tervigon (Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
11 Termagants
10 Termagants
2 Carnifex (Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)
Aegis Defense Line (Communications Relay)

The mission is best 2/3 while playing the scouring (5 objectives at 3VP and fast attack is scoring and fast give 1KP/table quarters/kill points).

Tyranids and Fortifications: Two Lists

As readers may know, earlier this month I moved back to MN from California. If moving into a new place isn’t enough, I have been training for my new contract at work 60 hours each of these last two weeks. All of this means I have not had much time for writing. I have been able to play in two tournaments, placing 4th and 5th out of a field of 15 and 16 respectively. I have tried some new things including zoanthropes and hormagaunts which I will be writing about in the future. Today I have two sample lists involving fortifications.

I have not yet used any fortifications yet in 6th, but I have faced them, and I recognize two that could significantly benefit Tyranids. The first is the skyshield landing pad. While the unfurled benefit of not scattering is great for players who make extensive use of deep striking, the real benefit is when the landing pad is shielded. This rule gives all models on top of the landing pad (which if the picture to the right is any indication could be my full 2000 point list) a 4+ invulnerable save against shooting attacks. Note that that is not a cover save, but an invulnerable save. This is huge from the Tyranid perspective as getting a 50% chance to shrug a wound off a T6 monster who often wouldn’t be getting an obscured save is huge. The biggest issue I have had so far this edition has been weathering shooting when I am going second, so this is huge! The downside is that many events, including the rapidly approaching Midwest Massacre, are not allowing the skyshield. If I could bring he skyshield my list would look like;

Battle Report: Tyranids vs. Space Wolves/Imperial Guard - Golden Throne Round 3

With 6th edition out for just over a month, I headed to San Jose, California for the world’s first ever sixth edition GT. The tournament would be six rounds over two days with a win/loss format using the book missions. My review of the event can be found here. I brought a 1500 point Nidzilla list;

Hive Tyrant (Warlord/Wings/Twin-Linked Devourers x2/Hive Commander)
Tervigon (Onslaught/Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
Tervigon (Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
10 Termagants
2 Carnifex (Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)

My round two opponent was David, a member of Team Zero Comp. He is also ranked 13th on Rankings HQ. He brought a Grey Hunter based Space Wolves list with Imperial Guard allies;

Rune Priest (Melta Bombs)
10 Grey Hunters (2 Plasma Guns)
10 Grey Hunters (2 Plasma Guns)
10 Grey Hunters (2 Plasma Guns)
10 Grey Hunters (2 Melta Gun/Wolf Banner)
10 Grey Hunters (2 Melta Gun/Wolf Banner)
5 Long Fangs (4 Missile Launchers)
5 Long Fangs (3 Missile Launchers/1 Plasma Cannon)

Primaris Psyker
10 Veterans (3 Plasma Guns)
Manticore

The mission is Big Guns Never Tire with the Vanguard deployment. David wins the roll to go first.

He has a lot of marines, and even worse, a lot of rapid fire AP2. I am fortunate though that the rune priest does not have Jaws, both of his psykers have book powers. One can take away my cover saves and at least one if not both has prescience. I think the key to victory is going to be getting my trygons into combat with his troops, as I should be able to clear a squad each turn. The focus of the carnifex unit will be killing the devastators. This calculation is purely about getting rid of AP3 firepower, as I completely forget about both heavy support units being able to score and that heavy support units are worth victory points. If you are thinking that this is not a good sign going into a game against a much more skilled opponent, you are right. It is not until we are tallying scores that I find out about my blunder. Will I be able to overcome this calculation? Find out after the jump!

Battle Report: Tyranids vs. Space Wolves (Loganwing) - Golden Throne Round 2

With 6th edition out for just over a month, I headed to San Jose, California for the world’s first ever sixth edition GT. The tournament would be six rounds over two days with a win/loss format using the book missions. My review of the event can be found here. I brought a 1500 point Nidzilla list;

Hive Tyrant (Warlord/Wings/Twin-Linked Devourers x2/Hive Commander)
Tervigon (Onslaught/Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
Tervigon (Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
10 Termagants
2 Carnifex (Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)

Despite only ever playing in one other northern California tournament, my round two opponent Tim is a guy I faced during the 6th edition release event at Heroes on Paper. He once again would be playing with his Loganwing;

Logan Grimnar (Warlord)
Rune Priest (Jaws/Living Lightning)
5 Wolf Guard (5 Terminator Armor/1 Storm Bolter+Chainfist/1 Storm Bolter+Power Axe/1 Power Axe+Assault Cannon/2 Power Axe+Storm Shield)
5 Wolf Guard (5 Terminator Armor/1 Storm Bolter+Chainfist/1 Storm Bolter+Power Axe/1 Power Axe+Assault Cannon/2 Power Axe+Storm Shield)
5 Wolf Guard (5 Terminator Armor/1 Storm Bolter+Chainfist/1 Storm Bolter+Power Axe/1 Power Axe+Assault Cannon/2 Power Axe+Storm Shield)
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers)
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers)
Aegis Defense Line (Quad Gun)

Having played nearly the same list before I know what I need to do to beat it. My big advantage here is that I have an abundance of AP2 combat attacks. What I need to do is use my S6 shooting to kill the storm shields so that I can easily mop up the rest of his terminators. My big threat here will be Jaws of the World Wolf which can take out any of my I1 beasts in a heartbeat.

The mission is purge the alien and we both have 7 units. The deployment is hammer and anvil. It is not night fight and I won the first turn.

Battle Report: Tyranids vs. Grey Knights (Draigowing) - Golden Throne Round 1

With 6th edition out for just over a month, I headed to San Jose, California for the world’s first ever sixth edition GT. The tournament would be six rounds over two days with a win/loss format using the book missions. My review of the event can be found here. I brought a 1500 point Nidzilla list;

Hive Tyrant (Warlord/Wings/Twin-Linked Devourers x2/Hive Commander)
Tervigon (Onslaught/Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
Tervigon (Catalyst/Cluster Spines)
10 Termagants
2 Carnifex (Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)

My round one opponent is Bobby, his Draigowing, and their Tau allies.

Draigo
1 Paladin (Thunderhammer)
10 Paladins (Apothecary, 3 Hammers, 3 Halberd, Banner, Stave, 4 Psycannons)
Shas’o (AFL, Missile Pod, 2 Shield Drones, Blacksun Filter, FNP)
3 Shas’ui (Team Leader, Flamer/Missile Pod, Blacksun Filter, 2 Shield Drones)
7 Fire Warriors

Bobby had some pretty sweet Tau conversions;

It was clear that Bobby is a fun guy and not being WAAC. He expressed that he wished he had enough Tau to just play with them, but as he did, not he brought Draigo along.

Deployment is dawn of war with crusade (3 objectives) as the mission. My strategy with Draigowing is to utilize spawned gants as a walls between me and them. The deathstar can only take out one unit a turn. My goal is to position them so that it is only free gants they are able to attack.

Nidzilla and Flying Tyrants in 6th: Changes To My List

Have no fear brave readers, battle reports from the Golden Throne are coming. I will be moving from CA to MN next week, and so I have blogger scheduled to automatically post one each morning while I am driving across the country. While today is not directly about Golden Throne, I will be utilizing things I learned at that event as I tweak my 1500 point list for an RTT this weekend in Pasadena.

So what was the weak point of my list? This may come as a shock...but it was the flying hive tyrant.

For all the love flying monstrous creatures are getting, I kid you not, they are not nearly as good as other fliers. I had four of my six opponents comment on how easy the flyrant took wounds. He was also underwhelming in close combat. Here is a highlight list of bad things that happened to him;

Tyranid Strategy In The Rulebook Missions: Golden Throne GT Prep 2

Yesterday I started off this series by reviewing the first three book missions as they pertain to my 17 model Nidzilla list. You should check that article out first as I reference some of the tactics I wrote there. This analysis is being done in preparation for the Golden Throne GT, the first grand tournament to feature the new 6th edition rules. Today I continue on with the final three missions.

Round 4
The Scouring
Dawn of War

The big difference between this mission and Crusade/Big Guns Never Tire is that I know exactly how many objectives there will be. My priorities for placement are the same as there are in Crusade: 1st get an objective in each deployment zone in area terrain, 2nd is to get one objective near the table edge in area terrain on a single side, 3rd is place midfield objectives so that my Tervigon can both be scoring and giving synapse to a unit on the rear objective. I don’t have fast attack so no fancy tactics there. Dawn of War here is nice as the linear deployment zones are the easiest to place objectives in when following my outlined strategy.

Tyranid Strategy In The Rulebook Missions: Golden Throne GT Prep 1

This weekend I will be playing in what to my knowledge is the first 6th edition grand tournament in the world. Six rounds, over one hundred participants, swag bags, and lots of other goodness will be at hand in San Jose, California. This is my second GT I have played in, and my first such major tournament outside of my local area. What have I done to get ready?

Played Malifaux exclusively the last two weeks.

American Football=11 Players...Nidzilla=7 Monsters

That might be a bit of a stretch, especially considering I was out of town for six days, but the truth is that I have not touched 40K in two weeks; no games, no serious strategizing, and not even a bit of painting. The easy hindsight answer would be that I have been spending my time with a casual skirmish game so that I enter this event with a light-hearted have fun mentality, which considering some of the silly (read: both clever and frustratingly powerful) combos and gamesmanship people have been coming up with might be needed, but truth be told I don’t have a reason other than finding Malifaux really refreshing. I will do some write ups about it in the coming weeks. Needless to say DUST and Malifaux are quite enticing compared too much of the negativity going around the 40K-sphere.

That said, here is a run down of my basic strategy for this weekend’s event considering all of the rounds are using the standard book missions. My list can be found here.

Battle Report: Tyranids vs. Orks (7/14/12 RTT Round 3)

On 7/14 I brought my 17 model Nidzilla list to Game Empire Pasadena for a 1500 point 6th edition 40K tournament. There was a great turnout of 26, including both Yakface and Blackmoor. The TO wanted the event to be as close to the rulebook as logistically possible meaning rulebook missions, random objectives, allies, and fortifications were all in play. Naturally I didn’t face anyone with allies and forgot to roll for random objectives in every game.

In round three I was paired against Keith and his battlewagon Orks. I misplaced my copy of his list, so here it is from memory;

Big Mek (KFF)
10 Lootas
10 Lootas
10 Kommandos (Boss Snikrot)
20 Shoota Boyz (PK Nob/2 Big Shoota?)
20 Shoota Boyz (PK Nob/2 Big Shoota?)
19 Shoota Boyz (PK Nob/1 Big Shoota?)
Battlewagon (2 Big Shootas/Deffrolla/Red Paint)
Battlewagon (2 Big Shootas/Deffrolla/Red Paint)
Battlewagon (2 Big Shootas/Deffrolla/Red Paint)
Aegis Defense Line

The game was dawn of war (formerly known as pitched battle) and we rolled three objectives. Keith wins the roll to go first and I successfully roll night fight for turn one. I do not seize. Keith rolls something unimportant for his warlord, but I roll +1 Victory Point for every challenge I win. I do not recall what psychic powers I rolled.

Battle Report: Tyranids vs. Necrons (7/14/12 RTT Round 2)

In round two I was matched against Scott W., a Necron player. Both Scott and I are going into this game with 20 battle points. While Necrons is already a hard match up, Scott’s list looks like it could be a killer;

Overlord (MSS, Warscythe, CCB)
~Cryptek (Destruction)
Overlord (MSS, Warscythe, CCB)
~Cryptek (Destruction)

7 Immortals
~Night Scythe
7 Immortals
~Night Scythe
7 Warriors
~Ghost Ark

Annihilation Barge
Annihilation Barge
Doomsday Ark

My army is weak against three things; deathstars with rerolls, mobile ranged dark elder, and mech necrons. The AV13 makes my mass of S6 shooting far less useful, and the ability to have my units lit themselves in combat with MSS is devastating when you consider they all have low leadership values and AP weapons. I also do not have a way of dealing with fliers.

Tyranid Shrikes in 6th: 2 Arguments In Favor of Viability

The role of Shrikes is less clear than the Gargoyle's.
One of the reasons I enjoy Tyranids is their fluff. A swarm of little flesh eating creatures, hulking monstrosities, and fast moving terrors all capture my imagination. One unit that that I have always loved the idea of, both in the fluff and due to its potential on the table, is the Tyranid Shrike. Unfortunately being only T4 without eternal warrior always served to limit their use. I feel though that the Tyranid Shrike could become a surprise player in 6th edition.

What makes the shrike have killer potential? First start with its tyranid warrior base stats; WS5, S4, T4, W3, I4, A3, Ld10. That set up is not a chassis to scoff at. Then add in its synapse, meaning all units within 12” are fearless. Not only that, they also prevent instinctive behavior tests (meaning I can keep my shooting units shooting). Also ever important is their roll as psychic defense, forcing tests taken within 12” of them to be rolled on three dice. The shrikes also have wings making them jump infantry which in 6th has some added bonuses besides extra movement; if their wings were not used in the movement phase they can reroll their charge lengths and get hammer of wrath attacks.

I like to arm shrikes similar to how I like my tyranid primes; lashwhip, bonesword, scything talons, toxin sacs, and adrenal glands. With these upgrades they are expensive, 60 points a model, but between cover and readily available FNP boosts thanks to tervigons (or biomancy) they essentially can be given a 5+/5++ all the time. They also have the added defense of being surrounded by monstrous creatures, forcing your opponent to deal with the jump infantry or the scary MC’s. Also, if initial opinions on the internet are accurate (which they may or may not be) the increase in plasma compared to melta and other S8 weapons means there is less that can cause instant death to the unit. While still slightly fragile, they hit like a ton of bricks. Charging most everything they hit on a ‘3’, plus they get to reroll all of the ones. Don’t forget anyone in base contact with their 40mm base must strike at initiative ‘1’. Against T4 they wound on a rerollable ‘3’ and against T3 they wound on a rerollable ‘2’. All of those wounds come from weapons against which “no armour saves may be taken” meaning they can pop guys in 2+ armor. On top of that multiwound models who have taken a wound from a bonesword must pass a leadership test or suffer instant death. These fools are a nasty package in close combat. So how has 6th edition given them a boost?

6th Edition Tyranid Flying Hive Tyrant List (And A Quick Game Against Blood Angels)

This weekend I will be playing in an RTT down in Pasadena, and I have made some changes to my 1500 point Tyranid list compared to how it looked in Stockton right after the new rule book came out. First, I want to be able to try out a flying hive tyrant. I would run two of these guys in 5th, so it seems silly that I wouldn’t bring them out when new rules are giving them a boost. The flyrant will also give me another chance to try out the random psychic powers.

This is what happens when you don't kill the Flyrant. All your models disappear (into its belly).

The bad news is that adding the big bad guy himself at 1500 means I have to drop the hive guard and the prime and left me a spare 40 points laying around. I filled the loose points by adding catalyst to the HQ tervigon and giving the tyrant hive commander. Both of these actions are counter to what most Tyranid pundits are suggesting. Before I go into my reasoning, here is the full list;

6th Edition Battle Report: Tyranids vs. Tau

The last round of my seven game marathon was against Julio and his Tau. Julio brought;

Commander Farsight
12 Fire Warriors with Pulse Rifles
12 Fire Warriors with Pulse Rifles
12 Fire Warriors with Pulse Rifles
8 Pathfinders (8 Markerlights/Devilfish with Burst Cannon and Pulse Carbine Drones)
Piranha (Fusion Blaster)
Hammerhead (Railgun and Pulse Carbine Drones)
3 Broadsides (3 Twin-Linked Railguns/3 Twin-Linked Plasma Rifles/Blacksun Filter)
3 Broadsides (3 Twin-Linked Railguns/3 Twin-Linked Plasma Rifles/Blacksun Filter)

I realize now that this list is illegal due to Farsight only allowing one unit of broadsides, but that obviously is after the fact now. He has a lot of high strength shooting, which of course scares my big bugs. Once I get across the table I should be able to handle his list, though it will be interesting to see how overwatch effects my charges. All that plasma may make me think twice about trying a long charge (note: it is almost always worth risking the long charge. If I don’t charge I am taking the shots anyways, and they will be at full ballistic skill rather than just BS1). I brought;

Tervigon (Onslaught/Scything Talons)
Tyranid Prime (Lashwhip/Bonesword/Scything Talons/Toxin Sacs)
2 Hive Guard
2 Hive Guard
Tervigon (Catalyst)
10 Termagants
2 Carnifex (Twin-Linked Devourers x2)
Trygon (Toxin Sacs)
Trygon

One thing I forgot to do was to swap out dominion on the tervigons for a different biomancy ability. Julio got the warlord ability that let him pick if nightfight was in play turn one, which he selected to have occur. I selected the Prime as my warlord and received move through cover for units within 12”. I completely forgot to use that. I should make a token to mark my warlord from now on so that I remember. In this report the unpainted tervigon is my troop while the painted one is my HQ. The random people in the background were friends and family of Julio. They all were fun making jokes and such. One of them was a fellow nid player.

The mission is Big Guns Never Tire and we are using Hammer and Anvil for the deployment. Not only does this mean there will be more space between us, but also that Julio can score with his heavy support. We roll for five objectives and thankfully I win the roll to go first.
